Thyme grows in the Mediterranean basin, notably in Morocco, France and Spain. It means "perfume" in Greek translated as "thumon". Thyme was used for the embalming of the dead in Egypt, and served as an offering to the gods among the Greeks. He was long associated with courage.

Thyme is a perennial plant with short, oval, bright green leaves. Its flowers are small and purple clear.
