The term basil derives from the Greek basilikón which means "royal plant". In India, it is a sacred plant that is associated with the worship of Vishnu and Krishna. It is planted around the temples as a symbol of protection. In some parts of Africa, Basil is used to ward off bad luck.

Basil India is an annual aromatic plant from 20 to 50 cm, with oval green leaves and small white or pink flowers. It is grown in India and Madagascar.
